Fun way to feed hay to rabbits

What a fun and unique way to both feed hay to your rabbit and also provide hours of entertainment. I purchased this hay holder for my Lionhead rabbit a small breed who is easily bored when in her cage. I was unhappy with manger style hay holders and wanted a better way to feed hay. This item seemed perfect.



When I first received this item I was surprised by how large it was and the generous hay filling capacity (when connected to the cage it is is about 7" wide 7" deep about 6" high) and how sturdy it looked. Standard wire holder with a ball that has plastic sides/ends with wire running around the center. The ball does detach from the holder if desired. Although filling it with hay is easy I am disappointed over how you close the door. The center of the ball has a small door that opens but it does not clip or lock shut. It may pop open if not securely pushed in. So far no problem but I do wonder how long that door will work. Because of this items size when attaching to the cage you will lose a lot of space. Preferably you would use this with a large or extra large rabbit cage. I prefer attaching mine to the cage to avoid getting the hay dirty from litter as rolls on the ground. Note: I have the Iris Plastic Rabbit Cage and so this could not attach to the thick plastic bars of the cage. This hay holder was made to attach on wire cages. To use this with my Iris cage I used 3 large zip ties and the holder is securely attached while the ball is still removable. Easy to cut off the inexpensive zip ties off when needed. Thought I would mention this to others using the same type of rabbit cage.



My rabbit quickly learned to use this Rollin' Hay Holder and seems to like playing with it. After about 5 days she started actively eating hay out of it and spinning it slowly around. She gets just the right amount of hay and there's not much waste under the hay holder. I mounted it at chest height so that hay particles do not fall into her eyes. My bunny is normally shy about new things in her cage and so I am pleased that she started using this item so quickly.



If you have a rabbit this is a fun way to feed hay and the price is about right. The title says this is for rabbits while the description says it will work for guinea pigs chinchillas or other small animals too. Also to note you do not get to chose the color you will receive which is mentioned in the item description. I received this item in purple. Just a reminder that you will receive 1 of 4 assorted colors.



PROS:

* Fun design that promises hours of entertainment while feeding hay that they need in their diet.

* Rabbit gets the right amount of hay not too much with less waste than the side hay mangers.

* Easily attaches to cage or can be used without the holder as a ball. Fun when bunny rolls this around your living room as a toy.

* Easy to fill with hay.

* Sanitary when connected to the cage using the holder.

* Easy to clean. I use a bottle brush and go through the wire ball door opening.



CONS:

* Poor design for closing the wire hay door in the ball. No clip or secure way to close. You push it to close but I wonder how secure this will be over time with continued use. I would imagine a small clip purchased separately would work to securely close this door. Good price though so despite this one problem I do recommend this for rabbit owners. Fountain great reservoir not so much.

First of all I know that on the other versions of the fountain (with or without this extra reservoir) there were reviews stating that the fountain was noisy or that their cats would not drink from it. This was not my experience the fountain runs pretty quietly you just need to make sure there is enough water in the bowl (enough to cover the little hole at the base of the bowl where filtration gets cycled through.)



You will need to give your pets time to adjust. My two kittens are 6 months old and they have always drank from a bowl. When I first hooked up the fountain they stuck their paws in and played a little but mostly looked at it nervously for a couple days. I left their regular bowl next to it and noticed after a few days one cat started to prefer the fountain. After a week I took the regular bowl away at meal time and my other cat started to drink from the fountain. I think most cats will need a gradual change to this don't expect them to like it overnight.



The bowl itself holds more water than both my cats need for 2 or 3 days. Getting a reservoir attachment wasn't needed but I got one just so I could always feel secure they'd have plenty of water if something happened and I was away from home. This may be different with dogs as I think they drink way more water.

The 50 oz. reservoir container was INSTANTLY KNOCKED OVER by my curious kitten. I had even tucked it by the wall in a position LESS likely to be knocked over... but this is designed so poorly that if your pet likes to jump over it or put their paw up on it bam... falls over and empties a ton of water all over the floor! (Yes it was "secured" by the little plastic "latch" piece on the back but it's very flimsy. Plus there is no way to flip the reservoir over after you fill it without spilling at least a little bit of water.)



So now I use the fountain by itself. I add a cup of water directly to the bowl at feeding time every day. It stays pretty clean way cleaner than the old bowl so I give it a good scrub about once a week. (Compared to the old bowl which was dirty daily.)



Unless you have a dog or need to be away from the house for more than a couple days I'd just get the fountain without the reservoir container. Drinkwell Pet FountainMore detail ...
